The song 'Indigenous People' was written by Shemmie in 1993. This was the year designated by the United Nations as the "Year of the World's Indigenous Peoples". Appropriately, Shemmie penned this song as his own way of paying tribute to the many many Indigenous people all over the world who had made some contribution to the betterment of their communities.
Shemmie hails from the Pitjara (or Bidjara) people in Central Queensland. He started to play music at a very young age, and developed interest in various musical styles ranging from country, rock and reggae to cultural. He taught himself how to play the guitar. Over the years, Shemmie has matured musically from his time performing with the band Aboriginal Cultural Shock to featuring on the debut "Emerging Artists" CD which was recorded live at the 1998 Barambah Beltout festival in Murgon, Queensland.
Indigenous People represents a new career direction for Shemmie. We will certainly hear more from him as time passes by.
