At Kurbingaibah - Education is the Key

Connecting with the younger generation of Australians has always been one of the major focus of Kurbingaibah - Centre for Indigenous Awareness. By devising and delivering culturally appropriate curriculum to visiting schools, Kurbingaibah hopes to make a difference. Among the educational institutions that visited Kurbingaibah so far are students from Corpus Christi at Nundah; Woolloowin State Primary School; Woodridge North State School; Sandgate State School; Pullenvale State School; Pallara State School and Milpera State High School just to name a few. The students were exposed to various aspects of Ningy Ningy culture - music, songs, dance, painting and storytelling by Songwoman & Law-woman Maroochy Barambah and Visual Artist/Storyteller Vanessa Fisher.

The schools undertook a site tour of Kurbingaibah. The distinct roles of men and women in Ningy Ningy society were also outlined. ASSPA students (the female ones) from Wellington Point State High School become the first batch of visitors to the new-look Yiran Yiran-bah (women's space) at Kurbingaibah. The completion of the women's space means that men's and women's businesses can be undertaken in their rightful places in accordance with traditional laws and customs. The importance of Kippa-Ring was also highlighted to the students. A number of students said that the sessions were very informative, educative as well as entertaining. Members of the Redcliffe Wakka Wakka dancers performed for the schools.

Kurbingaibah is open for cultural/environmental education and Aboriginal land management programs. Bookings are essential. Call (07) 3846 7722; fax (07) 3846 7020 or email ningyningy@dakibudtcha.com.au or write to P.O. Box 3261 South Brisbane Queensland 4101 for bookings, enquiries or further information. All programs are specifically designed to meet the needs and requirements of each educational institution.
